Segun Johnson Is Taking Tungba to the World

In a world dominated by studio perfection, auto-tuned vocals, and pre-recorded DJ sets, one man has stood firm in reminding us of the raw power of live music. His name is Segun Johnson, and he’s not just a performer — he’s a movement.

From Lagos to London, Maryland to Toronto, and now Hull, United Kingdom — Segun Johnson is redefining the sound of African celebration. With every beat, every chord, and every chant of “Sho ma nowo ye tan?” echoing through his mic, he’s igniting dance floors and transforming parties into cultural experiences.

Who is Segun Johnson?

Segun Johnson is a Nigerian singer, composer, and bandleader whose sound is rooted in the rich Yoruba rhythm known as Tungba — a fusion of percussive gospel, Fuji, and Highlife elements. Born into a musically inclined family in Lagos, Segun honed his skills through church choirs, street performances, and eventually formed a full band that is now one of the most in-demand live performance outfits across Africa and the diaspora.

But make no mistake — this isn’t your typical Tungba.

Segun has infused the genre with fresh energy, urban influences, humour, and charisma, making it cool and accessible for a new generation of fans. Whether he’s performing for traditional ceremonies in Nigeria or headlining birthday parties and weddings in London, his sound strikes the perfect balance between tradition and trend.

Jet-Setting for Joy: A Weekend That Says It All

Segun Johnson’s schedule is not for the faint-hearted — and if you need proof of just how committed he is to his craft, look no further than the first weekend of April 2025.

After arriving in London on Monday, 1st April, Segun wasted no time. His first few days were filled with business meetings, media promotion, brand engagements, and creative planning for his UK tour. With Sauti Sessions in Hull as a major stop on the tour, the visit also marked a significant opportunity to connect with UK-based creatives and audiences alike.

And he doesn’t just sing — he leads, commands, and elevates the mood of any gathering.

On Friday, 4th April, Segun travelled by train to Hull, where he was warmly received by the team behind The Gidi Vibes™.

That day, the city became his creative playground. From the scenic waterside views of Princes Quay to the heart of Victoria Square, Segun teamed up with local influencers and content creators to shoot promo visuals for Sauti Sessions — turning heads and drawing smiles as he moved through the city with energy, grace, and signature showmanship.

But the schedule didn’t stop there.

On Saturday, 5th April, Segun left Hull for Liverpool, where he performed at a glamorous 40th birthday celebration. True to his style, he lit up the evening with his signature blend of Tungba rhythms, live praise medleys, spontaneous crowd call-outs, and floor-filling transitions. Guests were left chanting, dancing, and praising long after the last note.

And then — as if that wasn’t enough — on Sunday, 6th April, he was back on a flight to Nigeria, where he performed again that same evening at yet another high-profile celebration.

This whirlwind weekend wasn’t just impressive for its logistics — it was a testament to Segun Johnson’s work ethic, passion, and global appeal. Whether in Lagos, London, Liverpool or Hull, Segun brings the same high-level performance, every single time. No lip-syncing. No backing tracks. Just real music, real connection, and real joy.

He’s not just touring — he’s carrying culture across continents, and Hull is proud to be one of the cities on this unforgettable journey.

The Cool Factor of Tungba

Tungba music, once seen as something reserved for churches and older crowds, has become the life of elite parties, thanks to Segun Johnson. His sound isn’t confined by tradition. He jokes with the audience, improvises lyrics that speak to real-time moments at events, and infuses every song with humour, praise, and celebration.

With every beat, every chord, and every chant of “Sho ma nowo ye tan?” echoing through his mic, he’s igniting dance floors and transforming parties into cultural experiences.

And he doesn’t just sing — he leads, commands, and elevates the mood of any gathering.

From calling out celebrants to singing bespoke praises for wedding couples or corporate hosts, Segun’s sets are custom, dynamic, and deeply interactive. His ability to blend contemporary Afrobeats with live percussion, keyboards, talking drums and crowd participation is what makes his shows not just concerts, but moments.
